Over 100 Flights Canceled Due to Strong Winds in the Netherlands

More than 100 flights have been canceled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport due to strong gusts of wind. The adverse weather conditions are also causing disruptions on railways and roads across the country.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow warning for nearly the entire country, except for Zeeland, North Brabant, and Limburg. Wind gusts are expected to reach speeds of 75-90 km/h in the west and northwest, and up to 100-120 km/h in the Wadden Islands.

Travel Disruptions

  • Air Travel: Travelers flying via Schiphol are advised to check the latest flight information or contact their airline, as both incoming and outgoing flights are affected by cancellations and delays.

  • Rail Travel: Train services experienced earlier disruptions due to fallen trees and branches on the tracks. Services are resuming, but passengers should remain alert for possible delays.

  • Road Travel: The Markerwaarddijk is closed to trucks and vehicles with trailers due to strong winds, with a speed limit of 70 km/h and an overtaking ban for other vehicles. Additionally, the A15 motorway towards Nijmegen is closed due to a jackknifed truck.

High Water Levels

The Ramspol storm surge barrier near Kampen has closed automatically because of high water and strong winds. This has temporarily halted shipping traffic in the area until the afternoon.

Upcoming Weather

An offshoot of Storm Darragh, which affected Ireland earlier this week, is expected to bring unsettled weather to the Netherlands on Saturday. While not expected to be a full storm in the country, strong winds and rain are anticipated.

The KNMI advises caution, particularly for cyclists and drivers of trucks and vehicles with trailers, due to the risk of heavy wind gusts and falling branches.
