Temporary Energy Emergency Fund in the Netherlands Discontinued for 2025

The Dutch Temporary Energy Emergency Fund that assisted tens of thousands of low-income households with high energy costs will stop in 2025. The government, energy suppliers, banks, municipalities, and social organizations could not reach an agreement on funding the initiative, according to a letter to Parliament.

State Secretary Jurgen Nobel stated that not enough additional financing was pledged by the involved parties. He noted that the legal and financial requirements necessary for collaboration between the government and private companies could not be met as they were in previous years.

Energy suppliers have expressed disappointment over the discontinuation. Essent, one of the major energy companies, criticized the government's decision, stating that "political courage seems to give way to bureaucratic hurdles and hesitations." Essent also disputed the government's explanation, claiming they were willing to contribute financially.

The government has reserved €60 million to support vulnerable households but indicates that future efforts will focus on sustainability measures to reduce energy consumption and costs. This support is expected to be provided through the Social Climate Fund, which becomes available in 2026.

The Temporary Energy Emergency Fund expressed regret over the decision, stating they were prepared to continue providing assistance as they had in the past two years.
